Thought Catalog: What It’s Like To Live In LA Without A Car
When you live in LA without a car, navigating each day is like a challenge that you need to enjoy. You’ll go to dinner with your friend Diana at 7:00 in West Hollywood if she can pick you up. Otherwise, you’ll go to a restaurant you can walk to and meet someone else. At times, you’re entirely reliant upon the generosity of others.
Relevant. Then again, I’d tell this guy to sign up for Zipcar or ride a bike.
Heading home. I see that oak tree everyday and wonder what the view is like up there. (Taken with Instagram at 405 traffic)
Did CicLAvia today. Farmer’s tan and sunburn aside, I really enjoyed it. It was nice to see the city without cars for a change, powered by massive human tenacity. Next time: sunscreen, a tank top, cash and a water bottle. (Taken with instagram)
Nextbus for LA Metro makes taking public transit here a lot more tolerable with realtime GPS telling when a bus will arrive. Now if they had it for the Big Blue Bus, I’d be set.
Inspired by Ciclovía, the original, weekly street closure event in Bogotá, Colombia, CicLAvia opens LA streets to pedestrians and bicyclists, creating a temporary web of public space on which residents of Los Angeles can walk, bike, socialize, celebrate and learn more about their own city. On 4/10/11, 7.5 miles of roadways will temporarily close to car traffic and open for recreational purposes. From Boyle Heights to Downtown, MacArthur Park to East Hollywood, CicLAvia encourages Angelenos to not only make active use of their streets, but to rediscover the roadways and neighborhoods that too often go unnoticed in a car. Help open LA’s streets… take part in the second CicLAvia on 4/10/11.
One of my professors was telling us about this and I really want to do it. Sounds so cool and it is so true what he said “A lot of people live in Los Angeles but don’t know it.” I’m one of those people. I’ve lived in LA my entire life and can definitely say that I’ve never really explored the county like I’ve always wanted to. Sure I’ve been downtown, through Hollywood, past MacArthur Park, to Fashion District, visited the Santa Monica Pier but have never explored those places. Participating in CicLAvia will help me learn about the place I call home. I mean just look at the route. Seems very interesting. Can’t wait for it!
Posting this here to remind me when the time comes.
